Most of our customers at Thomas Roofing are homeowners that have busy lives and never give a second thought to their roof until it gives them trouble. When something does go wrong, they really don’t know what to do. Luckily, at Thomas Roofing we have residential roofing down to a science.

The first thing we’ll do is inspect the roof to find the point of failure and decide if that failure was the result of storm damage, poor roof design, or simply old age. Once we determine the cause, we will decide whether you need a repair or an entirely new roof. In the case of storm damage, we will assist you with contacting your insurance to determine coverage.

After we determine who will be covering the repair or replacement you will pick out your new roof and from there the process becomes easy for you. You don’t even need to be home when our residential roofing crews get started. Our efficient team will come in and lay tarps to protect your landscaping, then tear off the old roof and determine if any wood needs to be replaced or if any new flashing work needs to be done.

Next, we will install a new underlayment then move right on to adding the new shingles. Once the roof is installed we will roll up the tarps and do a thorough cleaning and sweep with a magnet to remove as many stray nails as possible. WHY IS MOSS GROWING ON MY ROOF AND HOW CAN I GET RID OF IT?

Moss growing on a roof is a very common homeowner problem, but why is it growing there? If you’ve found yourself trying to solve this issue, we’ll be covering the reasoning behind why it’s there and how to stop it before it causes serious damage down the road. Why is it growing? Great question! You wouldn’t think something could necessarily grow on something like a roof, but we’ve all seen it and once it starts it can be tricky to stop. Moss starts developing because of moisture issues. It’s a sort of fungus that spreads across and inside the shingles of your roof. It’s highly absorbent and with every rainstorm that blows through it only gathers more strength to keep growing where it shouldn’t. When moss is growing in between your shingles and the underlayment material, you’re looking at potentially serious roof damage once it’s removed. How can you stop it? To prevent moss from growing further along your roof, you can always try removing it by gently spraying a mixture of vinegar, citrus or tomato juice to kill the fungus. Of course, you’ll want to be very careful not to damage the shingles underneath as best as you can, so don’t be too harsh when you’re removing the moss. Once you’ve successfully removed the moss from your roof, you’ll want to be sure to keep it away. If there’s not widespread damage, you can typically remove the moss and keep it gone. To do this, make sure to trim back any limbs that are overhanging your roof keeping the sun from shining to dry up any future moisture from rain or snow. Also, be sure to check to make sure your gutters are cleared to help with heavy rainfall and water collection during storm season. That way, you’ll at least be helping to guide the water away from your roof to prevent further growth of any moss. “ Flashing ” is a common term you’ll most often hear when it comes to roofing damage or repairs, especially on home inspection reports. It can be confusing trying to keep the different roofing terms straight and to know what matters most when it comes to functionality of the roof over your head. But, that’s exactly why we’re here to explain exactly what flashing is and why it matters for your roof.

“Flashing” is a roofing material that is used to cover the vulnerable joints in your roof. It’s a layer of added protection to help keep water from getting into areas like valleys or dips in your home or near the pipes of your chimney that could cause serious water damage if leaks occur. You’ll see the flashing most commonly made of aluminum or steel materials as they need to be very durable and tough to withstand wind, rain, and moisture throughout their working life as the seasons change.
